Why Won't Ordinary Equipment Work?
Ordinary dispensing system fail to adequately seal off DEF from the outside world. Regular diesel pumps, for example, usually allow some outside contaminants into the tank, which react with DEF to form crystals. These crystals are referred to in the industry as Creep which builds up along couplings, unions as well as pump impellers, pump walls, and motor shafts, wearing them down until they malfunction. This also build up around the pump's seals, breaking them down and further exposing the chemicals to the outside air. In the worst scenarios, crystals can cause parts of the pump motor to break ,causing your dispensing system be inoperable.
Even if the DEF is adequately sealed off from outside elements, the chemical elements in the pumping equipment itself can be a problem. DEF contains urea which is highly corrosive and deionized water, which attracts ions from materials with which it comes into contact. This causes a chemical reaction that produces salts. If it happens in a pump housing the salts can clog passageways and damage the system.Since ordinary pumping equipment usually contains zinc, aluminum, copper, brass, and other ionized metals, it is not suitable for DEF dispersal.
What Kinds Of Equipment Should I Use?
Consumers have a variety of options to dispense DEF safely. Manufacturers usually sell DEF storage equipment in a variety of sizes, ranging from one-gallon Jugs to 275-330 gallon totes to larger poly tanks. To prevent chemical reactions, these containers are usually made of either high-density polyethylene or stainless steel. All Fitting and Piping must be DEF compatible.
The best pumps are those that are self-priming. The Tecalemit HORNET W85 DEF PUMPS are true self-priming and can be used on fuel islands as well as on totes. If you run a large trucking or construction business, you may want to buy DEF in bulk and store it above ground. If so, you'll need heating equipment, as DEF crystallizes/freezes if it becomes colder than twelve degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause damage to pipes, tanks, and dispensing equipment.
Tecalemit also has a self-contained DEF storage tank -- DEF-PRO ALL IN ONE with heating supply to prevent freezing of product and the dispenser and nozzle. This is a plug and use system; all you need to do is wire it to your electrical source, fill and use.
If you're looking to get into the trucking or construction business, Innovative Fueling Solutions sells DEF equipment, and a wide range of other fueling and maintenance products. We also service and install underground tanks and dispensers for commercial retail sites as well as retrofitting the existing dispenser with DEF. We stock a variety of equipment from Tecalemit for quick installations, and carry various other manufactures’ products for DEF, diesel and gasoline systems. For more information, contact us today.
